摘要:To translate Chinese book’s title perfectly, the translator must comprehend the original content and understand the author’s background as well as which class he or she comes from. An excellent translator should have a good ability to comprehend the discrepancy between the two languages which include culture, history, people’s life attitude and so on.
of subtitle and got a good feedback. It took the press a great effort to decide the English title for 《彭德怀自述》。Peng Dehua (1989-1974),is a name that millions of Chinese people know. However, foreigners know little about him, so when translating this book title, we should at least give foreign readers a hint to help them to establish the basic understanding about general Peng Dehua’s influence in china. The translator succeed in arising reader attention by naming it: Memoirs of A Chinese Marshal--A Cultural revolution "Confession" by Marshal Peng Dehuai(1898-1974), Covering his Career from Services in China's Warlord Armies to Command of the Chinese People's Volunteers in Korea. This is a very successful translated title, compared with another one:《陈毅与赣粤边根据地》.The later one was translated into a name “Chen Yi and the Jiangxi-Guangdong Base Area”. The first title take reader into book by using the term “china’s warlord” and the term “command of the Chinese people’s volunteers in Korea”. These terms are familiar to foreign reader so the name of the book could be understood. In compare, terms such as “Jiangxi-Guangdong Base Area” are too abstract for foreigners to understand.
2.4Cultural Recasting Principle
“Recasting is the best way to guarantee readability of target language.” (刘宓庆, 1999:197, with my translation) While translating an Chinese title into English, simplification is employed frequently, that is Chinese characters such as “集”, “记”, “传”, “经”, and “录” are deleted to what have been translated, which is, as this paper advocates, cultural recasting.
Foreign readers may connect Mr. Lu Xun's 《阿Q正传》with《皮克维克外传》The pickwick papers) and Draw a comparison between Mr. Pickwick and Mr. Ah Q mentally. They may understand Mr. Pickwick is a comical figure due to the two characters, “外传”. By this way the target title matches the source title very well.
The character “经” would leave Chinese many things to their imagination. The English book titles can be translated into Chinese literally so can Chinese titles into English. 《易经》, one of the Confucian classics, has been translated into English as The Book of Changes; 《诗经》to the book of songs Book of Songs; 《孝经》to The Book of Filial Piety. While bible “the holy book of the Christians, consisting of the OLD TESTAMENT and NEW TESTMETNT,” (The Commercial Press, 1998:123) has been translated into Chinese as 《圣经》, which even the one who has nothing to do with Christianity can understand that it is a book about religion. Rousseau, the original author of The Confessions, made a good name for himself around the world by his thoughts. This author does not know how The Confessions is translated from French to English, but the translation of it from English to Chinese is marvelous. Its Chinese version title ,《忏悔录》could drive Chinese readers’ imagination to go as far as they could, thinking that the author is honest and philosophical. The two characters “忏悔” can inform Chinese readers that this book concerns about the writer’s own experiences. And , the character “录” can accomplish cultural recasting because it can indicate that the writer tends to confess many things.
2.5The Principle of Linguistic Philology and Loyalty
Translation is a cross language activity, obviously, we must obey the different &
