Chapter One Introduction

1.1 Significance of the Research
All the signs have suggested that the remarkable growth in the use of English hasestablished its status as a global language. And the global status of English mainly owes tothe British Empire’s colonization during the nineteenth century and American economicand political power since the twentieth, just as Crystal (2001: 5) says “There is the closestof links between language dominance and cultural power. Without a strong power,whether political, military or economic, no language can make progress as an internationalmedium of communication”. However, because of the users’ awareness of their nativeidentities from different parts of the world, and linguistic and cultural transfer fromvarious sources, English has been nativised and developed into diversified and pluralisticEnglishes (Pan Zhangxian, 2005: 51).Up to now, Australian English, Indian English, Singapore English, Malaysia Englishand so on have already been well recognized. With the fast increasing of communicationand exchange with the outside world, China has been gaining strength quickly in thepolitical, economic area and the like in the world. However, there is a wide cultural gapbetween the East and the West. And there are numerous things: notions, objects, ethniccultures and various ways of life, some of which are unique in the world, untold of orunheard of, even undreamed of by the English-speaking people. Some of them areuntranslatable, such as qi (气), Taoism (道) and yinyuan (姻缘), so English used in Chinais strongly influenced by the Chinese language, its profound culture and its sophisticatedsociety with a long history of five thousand years. This variety rapidly emerging in Chinaion. For this reason, more attention should be given to the study from this point ofview.It is beyond doubt that the Chinese features shown in China English are not onlyhelpful to spread Chinese civilization and culture but also of significance to the society.Language can increase the cohesion of the speakers of a speech community. In theoccasions where English is a necessary communication tool, the Chinese-flavored talk ofChina English can hold the Chinese descendents all over the world together. As for thefeatures of Singapore English, T. T. B. Kob, a Singaporean delegate in United Nations, hashis brilliant comments as follows:“When one is abroad, in a bus or a train, or aero-plane and when one overhearssomeone speaking, one can immediately say this is some one from Malaysia, or Singapore,and I should hope that when I’m speaking abroad my countrymen will have no problemrecognizing that I am a Singaporean.” (Jia Guanjie & Xiang Mingyou, 1997: 12)Nevertheless, our study of China English is not to pick out the grammaticalmistakes, but rather the Chineseness of English when it is used to introduce and discussthe Chinese culture. And this Chineseness refers to the deviations from the norm orStandard English in vocabulary, idiomatic usage, or syntax and discourse. Therefore, itcould be an innovated form of vocabulary, the Chinese substitution of some expressions,and particular sentence structures (Pan Zhangxian，2005: 115).

1.2 Structure of the thesis
