Chapter Two Reception Aesthetics and Literary Translation

2.1 The Origin and Development of ReceptionAesthetics

Refocusing on the role of readers, Russian Formalism, Prague Structuralism, thephenomenology of Roman Ingarden, Hans-Georg Gadamer’s hermeneutics and the“sociology of literature” were the five tendencies in 1960s that created an intellectualclimate where German Reception Aesthetics (RA) could flourish. RA was developedby some German scholars at the University of Constance in 1960s and 1970s, andHans Robert Jauss and Wolfgang Iser are two major representative scholars of RA.Quite different from the text-centered and author-centered theories, RA focuses on theinteraction and the connection between works and readers. The meaning of a work isachieved in an ongoing process of realization by the receiver. That readers take anactive part rather than a passive participant as receivers in reading is emphasized.Their basic concepts include “Horizon of Expectation”, “Fusion of Horizons”,“Appealing Structure” of the text, and so on.

As a literary and aesthetic theory, Reception Aesthetics was first brought up inthe 1960s in Germany and became the absolute announcement of aesthetic revolutionthere. The most influential school is the Constance represented by Hans Robert Jaussand Wolfgang Iser, scholars at the University of Constance. What should be noticed isthat the basic ideas of RAare not totally original and most of its important points havebeen raised or involved by theoretic pioneers at different times and occasions before.Therefore, RA is an integrated result with creativity achieved by widely absorbing thereasonable elements of other literary and aesthetic theories. They all shift the emphasis from literary work and author to readers. Among those theories, MartinHeidegger and Hans-Georg Gadamer’s philosophical Hermeneutics andPhenomenology of Roman Ingarden, in particular, provided a solid intellectual basisfor German Reception Aesthetics.

2.2 Three Main Concepts of ReceptionAesthetics
