Next, the translator acquainted herself with radio theories and applicationsin the ST, and the parallel text was utilized to make her comprehension accurate andprofound. Last, according to the translation volume, she made a schedule to balancethe workload, and the timeline is given at the end of this section.

2.1.1 Translation Tools

2.1.1.1 Traditional Dictionaries

Since authentic diction makes up anelegant text, and unfamiliar words areinevitably encountered in the task,dictionaries were regarded as anindispensable auxiliary instrument for anaccurate translation. Therefore, authoritative and commonly-used dictionaries werebrought from bookstores by the translator, including Oxford Dictionary, LongmanDictionary, Collins Dictionary, and Merriam-Webster Collegiate Dictionary.Although the paper dictionary could be somewhat inconvenient, it is the most reliableway to search the usage of terms and check the optimal collocation of words.

2.2 While-translation

In the analysis process, the translator probed into obstacles and uncovered thelinguistic nature of the ST, paving the way for an idiomatic and elegant translation.Since a translation theory provides some pragmatic strategies and influences thetextual quality, she also equipped herself with the scientific theory after an in-depthresearch of EST.

2.2.1 Difficulties Encountered

2.2.1.1 Lexical Level

An abundance of specialized terms are included in this work because thishandbook introduces some electronic components and explains their function. Most ofthe translation demands online verification, i.e., 冲击电流 inrush current, 输入电源线 incoming power lines. Some of the terms are frequently used in daily life but areendowed with technical meaning in this text. For those rarely seen on the website,timely negotiation and confirmation with experts should be adopted. For example, thefilters used for line-frequency rectification which should be professionally expressedas “工频滤波器” was literally translated into “用于矫正线路频率的滤波器” at first.Although the two phrases mean the same, the latter is lack of precision compared withthe former.

Synonymy and polysemy are the other two lexical features attracting the attentionof the translator because they pose a challenge of finding their counterpart. For instance, the title of chapter 7.7.2 is Rectifier Strings or Stacks and the two sub-titlesare Diodes in Series and Diodes in Parallel. The translator nearly found herselfcaught out on the implication of the first phrase until she combined the wholediscourse to make a comprehension and discovered their identical meaning, which is“二极管的串、并联”. Another example is cited to illustrate a term which is differentfrom the common meaning:
