sh-Chinese andChinese-English Dictionary of Ship Engineering” (梁启康, 2009), and other professionaldictionaries of shipping. After reading relevant materials and looking through the officialwebsites of the shipyard and the owner, the reporter started to be more familiar with thebackground knowledge of shipbuilding and the condition of this project.

Chapter Two Major Issues and Analysis of Causes

2.1 Terminology andAbbreviations

Terminology is a word or an expression specific to a field. Most terms are well-knownto professionals in that field, and they are commonly used in international practice, andeach industry has its own terms. They are important, even essential, for interpretationtraining and practice (Jiang, 2013: 74). Being expert in terminology can be very beneficialto the expression of the target language, especially when the interpreter is facing atechnical and thematic task (Gile, 2002).

Interpretation is a one-time translation activity carried out by the interpreter under theon-site pressure (张吉良, 2003: 13). It requires the interpreter to listen and comprehend thesense of the source language, memorize the information received, and then use the targetlanguage to express the meaning properly in a very short time.

This project is about the shipbuilding industry. At the beginning, the reporter knewnothing about this field. So she had to spend a huge amount of time learning relevantknowledge and detailed information of this project. And she found that in the shipbuildingindustry, there are so many terminology and abbreviations used in the daily work. If onedoes not know their meanings and corresponding English expressions, the interpretingwork would be very hard to carry out. And here are some examples that show the mistakesthe reporter made due to lack of terminology and abbreviations.

2.2 English with the RussianAccent

Accent is one of the variables in acquiring source language in the process ofinterpreting (Pochhacker, 2016). The more the spokesperson's accent deviates from theinterpreter's familiar accent, the more difficult it becomes for the interpreter to understandthe information he received (Kurz, 2008; Kurz & Basel, 2009).

In the process of interpreting, the reporter found that PM of the owner, Oleg, speaksEnglish with a strong Russian accent. It caused great difficulty for the reporter in listeningand understanding the source language, furthermore influencing the quality ofinterpretation.

As we all know, due to the characteristics of the Russian, the accent of English thatRussian people speak is relatively strong and difficult to understand, and also not thatfriendly to non-native English speakers who do not speak Russian as well. Although, thereporter had known a little about the accented English, the Russian accent was still hard tobe adapted to. There are two examples as follows that show the Russian accent.
