Jiangsu New Yangzi Shipbuilding Co., Ltd. was founded on May 12, 2005 with theregistered capital of RMB 521million, located in Jingjiang & Jiangyin industrial zone,Jingjiang city, Jiangsu province, mainly engaged in large and medium-sized ship and oceanEngineering equipment design and manufacturing, with 30 vessels or 3 million deadweighttons annually shipbuilding capacity. The product of the shipyard covers series of 1,100 TEU to 10,000 TEU containervessels, 36,000-dwt to 93,000-dwt bulk carrier ship, 27,500 cubic meters of LNG ship, 4.7million cubic feet of wood chip carrier, 94,000-dwt self-unloading vessels, other specialships and jack-up drilling platform.

CMA CGM S.A. is a French container transportation and shipping company. It is aleading worldwide shipping group, using 200 shipping routes between 420 ports in 150different countries, ranking fourth in the world. Its headquarters are in Marseille, France. Itis one of the biggest and the most important clients of the shipyard.

1.2 Interpreter’s Work and Timetable

1.2.1 Interpreter’s Work

In the weekly meeting, the reporter acted as an interpreter for the representatives fromboth sides, the shipyard and the owner. PM of the owner, Oleg, is from Russia. And hespeaks English with the Russian accent. When he spoke in the meeting, the reporter shouldtranslate English into Chinese to the representatives of the shipyard. From the shipyardside, the representatives are Paul, PM of the Business Department, Allen, PM of theProduction Department, Henry, PM of the Quality Control (QC) Department, and William,PM of the Health, Safety and Environment (HSE) Department. When they spoke in themeeting, the reporter should translate Chinese into English to Oleg. In conclusion, thewhole work of the interpreter is kind of the consecutive interpreting plus the two-wayinterpretation.

Preparations

The shipbuilding industry was completely new to the reporter. So in the early time ofher internship, the reporter spent a tremendous amount of time knowing this industry andthe project. Paul, PM and the person in charge of this project, provided many documentsand materials for the reporter. At first, the reporter found that there were so many terminology and abbreviations that she did not understand. So she consulted Paul. Paulrecommended some basic materials to her. She read them carefully. Once faced with anyproblem, she asked Paul. Paul is very kind and enthusiastic.
