Chapter Four Conclusion and Recommendations

As its economy rapidly grows, the culture of Jiangsu is also going global. Successfultranslation of Jiangsu Province Yearbook 2018 will render a bridge between Jiangsu andother foreign countries. Under the guidance of Functionalist Approaches, the authoranalyzes the translation at lexical, syntactic and textual levels in this report.Comprehensive analysis is carried out on the major issues and difficulties the authorencountered in the process of translation, as well as various causes, and correspondingsolutions are illustrated with some typical examples. As for lexical difficulties, dictionariesand parallel texts can be used to make up the author’s lack of professional knowledgebecause most terms and proper nouns have some existing translated versions. At the sametime, literal translation and free translation are preferred to solve difficulties about somenumeral abbreviations and expressions with Chinese characteristics. For syntacticdifficulties, amplification and voice changes are used to translate non-subject sentences,and division, combination, and conversion are used in translating the long and complicatedsentences. When it comes to textual level, cohesive devices can be used to make thetranslated text more acceptable to foreign readers, and the logical coherence shall also bekept.

However, there are also some limitations in this report. First of all, because of theauthor’s lack of professional knowledge in biology and chemistry, some professionalwords may not be fully translated and the analysis of some problems concerningprofessional knowledge could be not profound enough. Secondly, although the author triesto reduce the defect in translation, the translated version still can be improved for therebeing some rough expressions influenced by the Chinese structure. Therefore, the author issupposed to polish up her translation skills and practice more to gain more experience.
