applying Gutt’s RelevanceTheory, the translator has analyzed term explicitness, semantic reconstruction, and contextualeffects so that she can make suitable linguistic choices.

First, this thesis attempts to discuss the translation of the User Guide of RadiotherapyContouring Software from the perspective of Gutt’s Relevance Theory with special emphasislaid on the discussion of the interplay of processing efforts and contextual effects. It is foundthat the adoption of these translation methods and techniques can make the version faithful tothe original in meaning, expressive in wording, vivid in image, and balanced in structure,which contributes to the optimal relevance of the original text in translation. Researches onthe translation of user guides are insufficient, let alone studies on the C-E translation of userguides in the field of medical science. In the whole translation, the translator tries to minimizethe reader’s processing efforts while maximizing contextual within the framework ofRelevance Theory. Specifically speaking, she takes into account many factors according to thereader’s acceptability and expectations, and it turns out that Relevance Theory is persuasiveand explanatory in this area.

Second, confronted with a new field, the translator can produce high-quality target text ifshe has full preparation before the actual work, including collecting technical terms, searchingparallel texts, searching online resources, and catching up with specialized knowledge. In thispractice, it takes the translator nearly two weeks to get familiar with registration documents,human organs, the rule of radiotherapy and radiation, and the algorithm process of thesoftware. Since the user guide of the core product is identified to be classified for a company,most of the files are not open to the public. When the translator processes the writer’sinformative intentions, she has to infer them to the readers professionally and conciselyaccording to their cognitive environment and psychology. With the momentum of the big dataera, the translator also should take good advantage of resources on the Internet, includingonline dictionaries, corpora, and popular CAT tools, leading to an efficient and availabletranslating system.
