Translation is a very complex process of rewriting. Translators play the role of abridge in the process of cross-cultural communication. A translator cannot simply standon the position of the reader or the author. He or she plays multiple roles and is themain body of cross-cultural translation activities, which is the key to the quality of thetranslation and the success or failure of cross-cultural communication. Therefore, atranslator need to make a full preparation before translating. I started my pre-translationwork from text analysis, parallel text search and translation scheme formulation.

2.1.1 TextAnalysis

Beneath a Burning Sky, is a beautiful and gripping story of love, betrayaland mystery, set against the heat and intrigue of colonial Alexandria. It’s set inthe 1800’s where women in this period were pretty much treated like property. Itinvolves the representation of feminism in literary works. Through the loveentanglement with Olivia and Edward as the core line, Beneath a Burning Skysuccessfully reproduced the social life of Alexandria from the regional customsand manners, people’s words and deeds, spiritual ideas, political attitudes.

This romance novel is a narrative literary genre which is centered onshaping the characters and reflects the social life through the narration of thestory plot and the description of the environment. Vivid character image,complete story plot and specific environment of character activities are the threeessential elements of a novel. Among them, the character image is the principalelement.

2.2 Problems Finding and Solving during translation

To some extent, the process of translating is the process of finding and solvingproblems which can be talked about from the perspectives of text level and non-textlevel.

2.2.1 Problems Finding

As we all know, translation is a well-paid profession (at least in the past, especiallyfor interpreters), but the challenges facing translators are also formidable. Most of thetime, translation practitioners are not so glamorous as those in the TV series 'translator'.On the contrary, they are more likely to encounter various setbacks in the actual workprocess, and sometimes even some unexpected emergencies, which make peoplecompletely unprepared.

In the translation process of Beneath a Burning sky, I have met problems from twoaspects : at the text level, the main problems are the problems in the transformationbetween the source language and the target language. In terms of vocabulary, manyChinese and English words cannot be equivalent, mainly including culture loadedwords, proper nouns, etc. In terms of sentence structure, Chinese and English belong todifferent language system. English pays attention to hypotaxis, with a clear sentencestructure of “subject predicate”, and usually uses explicit cohesive devices(conjunctions); Chinese pays attention to parataxis, and the relationship between
