Chapter2 Interpreting Procedure

2.1 Pre-interpreting Preparation

“Pedagogically, it's important that the students themselves do the research and the preparation, not the teacher (Seleskovitch & Lederer, 1995:68).”Preparation for interpretation is very important for theinterpreter. In order to successfully complete the task, the interpretermade the following preparations. First, she collected the relevant background knowledge of English history study through books and Internet. Secondly, a professional glossary covering important terms that mightoccur in the speech is constructed. These preparations were aiming to reduce information loss during the interpreting process.

2.1.1 Preparation for the Background Knowledge

The interpreter did an exhaustive research about the relevant background knowledge in advance to guarantee the quality of her interpretation. First, through academic websites such as CNKI and Super Star, the interpreter learned something about the speaker, Professor Ian Newton. Though the interpreter had had a thorough knowledge of the speaker’s academic background and experience, however, the parallel texts of the lecture cannot be acquired. The author had to do research about the relevant knowledge background of the topic instead.

Understanding the history of English-speaking countries is vital for understanding the history of English as a language. The interpreter also began with reading books that introduce the culture and history of English speaking countries, especially about Britain and the United States. Through reading these books, the interpreter built an overview of the history of the English language, which is of great help to the interpreter when she interprets.

2.2 Interpreting Process

Because of the pandemic, the consecutive interpretation is a simulated one and is performed at the interpreter’s home.14 audiences listened to the lecture and evaluated the interpretation.
