Chapter 2 Description of the Task and Process

2.1 Pre-Translation

Before translating the text, to understand the characteristics of such texts, the translator reads the relevant parallel text and goes through the source text, highlighting the terms that appear in the text and checking their meanings and making a glossary. 

In the translation process, pre-translation work is critical. The translator first understands the background of the text and reads the whole text carefully to have a preliminary understanding of the content, type, and characteristics to grasp the text style and form a clear translation idea.

There are many Medical terms in the text. The translator mainly refers to the Wechsler Desk Top Medical Dictionary and the English-Chinese Medical Vocabulary (3rd Edition) for their meanings. In addition, the translator also uses such dictionaries as Oxford Advanced Learner's English-Chinese Dictionary (8th Edition), Xiangya Medical Professional Dictionary, English-Chinese Medical Dictionary, Wechsler's Dictionary, English-Chinese Dictionary (edited by Lu Gusun), and Collins Advanced Learner's English-Chinese Dictionary, through which the translator can look through and understand the particular usage of the words appeared in the text. 

The translator collects relevant terms from the text into the Excel file and translates terminology by consulting the dictionaries mentioned above. In addition to consulting dictionaries, the translator also refers to Non-Literary Translation edited by Li Changshuang, A Concise Course on English-Chinese Translation edited by Zhuang Yichuan, and A Guide to Chinese English edited by Pinkham to strengthen her knowledge of translation theory so that she can skillfully apply translation strategies and techniques to improving translation efficiency and quality.

2.2 While-Translation

During the translation process, the translator marks words and phrases that are not easily understood and areas where information needs to be sought. In the second translation, the translator corrects the obvious mistakes made in the first translation and marks the key points and difficulties in the text. The translator also uses a variety of searching ways to identify the accuracy of the marked elements. In the third translation, the translator focuses on whether the sentences are fluently expressed, whether they reflect the content of the source text and conform to the expression habits of the target language, and whether they are coherent at the level of the discourse. For sentences that are not certain for their meanings, the translator not only looks up various sources but also discusses those sentences with classmates until she works out a solution.
