Chapter 3 Case Analysis and Translation Techniques

3.1 Techniques at Lexical Level

In the source text, the author used metaphor or simile at lexical level. If the translator dealt with these words in literal, the target readers would read the text with less joyful and lively. So the translator used amplification to transport the message more abundantly, conversion to make source text smoothly, and word extension to express the confused meaning more clearly. Just as Baker mentioned, translation is conceived primarily as a process of intercultural communication, whose end product is a text which is capable of functioning appropriately in specific situations and contexts of use(Baker, 2004).

3.1.1 Amplification

Amplification refers to the addition of certain words, sentences or passages to a translation in order to better express the ideological content of the original work or to better achieve a specific translation purpose, according to the lexical, syntactic, semantic, rhetorical or stylistic needs of the target language, or due to the constraints of certain specific cultural norms of the target language. (Xiong, 2014) In some cases, amplification can let the target readers directly get knowledge of the features that some words convey in the source text. The translator used this technique in order to recreate the rhetoric or ellipsis which can not completely deliver in target text, so amplification can retrieve a part of these things in adding more information.

4.1 Findings

In the translation process, the most significant difficulty for the translator is comprehension and expression. As a carrier of scientific knowledge, scientific nature is its most important feature. Although different from ordinary scientific texts, popular science texts still have a large number of technical terms and strict operational procedures, which require the translator to be careful, to check the accuracy of these terms through extensive research, and to deal seriously with the scientific parts of the story while making the narrative interesting. 'The scientific knowledge disseminated in popular science works should be correct and the logic of the text should be rigorous and stand up to scrutiny' (Guo, 2004). In line with the fact that scientific knowledge should not be ambiguous and misunderstood by readers, translations of popular science texts should be more careful and responsible to the authors and readers of the original texts.

Unlike other popular science works, Breath of Salt puts the science into the documentary, with the author relaying the stories of those who experienced it in the third person, telling the story of the development of cystic fibrosis from the different perspectives of doctors, patients, their families and funders.
