Relevance-Adaptation Theory may be a new pragmatic model which mixes Sperber andWilson’s Relevancy Theory as well as Verschueren’s Adaptation Theory.This model is across-cultural,translator-centered theoretical paradigm.The ultimate goal of the translator is forthe target reader to accept the translation and achieve successful communication.Therefore,what the translator is concerned about is whether the translation can be accepted by the targetreader on the premise of persuading the target reader.Only when the target language readersand translators communicate successfully,can the translation be accepted by the targetlanguage readers,which also means that the translation meets the aesthetic expectations andaccepting ability of the target language readers.Therefore,what the translator needs to do is tocarefully choose the appropriate language and translation strategy.

Under this model,translation is completely a clear reasoning process to find relevance,andit is also a dynamic process of adapting to relevance.After the author makes ostensive actions,the translator seeks for the optimal relevance from the cognitive context of the original text andthen acts in the cognitive context of the target language.When translating,the translator standsbetween the original author and the target language reader for cross-cultural communication.After understanding the purpose of the original author’s communication,the translatorcommunicates with the target language readers by ensuring the cognitive harmony of the targetlanguage readers.Then,make full use of the existing cognitive resources,give full play to thesubjective initiative,seek the best relevance in the communicative context of the original textand the language context,and finally in the target context based on variability,negotiation andadaptability to make language choices.

2.2 Previous Studies on the Translation of Huo Zhe

When researching the word Huo Zhe,the author finds more than 2000 articles about thisbook.But most of these articles focus on its Chinese version.Compared with studies on theoriginal text Huo Zhe,the studies on the Michael Berry’s translation of Huo Zhe are relatively few and most of them are master theses.
