CHAPTER TWOTHEORETICAL FRAMEWORK
2.1 Daniel Gile’s Interpretation Comprehension Model
Almost all interpreters, be it green-hands or experienced ones, are familiar with the name“Gile”. He is the scholar and SI interpreter who put forward several important models ofinterpreting of all kinds. The author focused on his Interpretation Comprehension Model.
2.1.1 Brief Introduction
Daniel Gile, a professor at ESIT, is one of the most famous scholars in the translation field. Asan experienced practitioner and instructor in interpreting, he had analyzed the whole processof interpreting and put forward several theories.
In the book Basic Concepts and Models for Interpreters and Translator Training, Gilepresented the Interpretation Model.
He emphasized that comprehension plays a vital role during the whole interpretingprocess, according to that he raised the noted Interpretation Comprehension Equation, namely,C (Comprehension) = KL (Knowledge of the Language) + ELK (Extra-Linguistic Knowledge)+ A (Analysis Ability).
In his model, “=” refers to the result of a complementary combination of linguisticknowledge, extra-linguistic knowledge, and analysis; while “+” does not mean mere additionin a mathematical way, but the interaction of the three factors. Gile pointed out that“comprehension” means not only the simple reception and recognition of the words andsentence structures used by the speaker but also the application of the extra-linguisticknowledge. Only by true comprehending can an interpreter express the speaker’s thoughts and intentions. Therefore, in daily training, practitioners should pay attention to combiningknowledge of the language, extra-linguistic knowledge, and analysis ability, so as to improveinterpreting skills.

2.2 Pre-task Preparation Review
Contrary to interpreting, translation, as a communicative activity between different languagesand cultures, has no time limit. Translators can use books and the Internet and other resourcesto assist their translation work. Interpreters are not able to spend too much time accessinginformation during work, and they must deal with the problems occurred independently. Inorder to ensure an accurate and smooth information transmission, it is especially important forthe interpreter to conduct sufficient advance preparation. Luccarelli Luigi (2006) hassuggested that conference preparation is a skill that even veteran interpreters need to perfectover time. The author echoes with Luccarelli Luigi on deeming pre-task preparation as a setof skills that could be learned and honed with further experiences and more practices.
Pre-task preparation can be divided into two categories: the short-term one and thelong-term one.
Long-term preparation mainly includes the accumulation of various knowledge, thecultivation of professional literacy in various fields, the improvement of comprehensionability, the training of short-term memory and the renewal of buzz words. The short-term oneis a more targeted preparation for a specific interpreting task.
