4.1 Accuracy

It is widely known that a qualified interpreter must be able to provide a reproduction of thesource text which is faithful, expressive and elegant. Among these standards measuringinterpretation output, being faithful and accurate is the most important. If the interpreter failedto deliver correctly the original meaning, it may leave the audiences in confusion andambiguity, thus diminishing the communication effect. Moreover, mistakes in output likeomission or misunderstanding of the keywords might cause huge consequences on someoccasions.

Deficient pre-task preparation does no good to the interpreter. One could be distractedsearching for an appropriate word or even have a problem understanding the original speech.Therefore the interpreter is easier to make mistakes and cause consequences like theaforementioned.

This can exemplify the importance of pre-task preparation. The “shock wave” in thesource language should be translated into“冲击波”, instead of“短波”. Together with being a non-surgical therapy withno need for painkillers makes it an ideal therapy to speed up recovery and cure variousindications causing acute or chronic pain. However, the author paid less attention to thetreatment measures of orthopedic diseases during her pre-task preparation, therefore, the word“shock wave” didn’t ring a bell at all. Furthermore, the author misheard the word and thoughtit was “short wave” due to the speaker’s accent. This inaccuracy should have been avoided byexpanding the breadth of advance preparation.
