2.2 Domestic and Foreign Research
Interpretation studies in China lag far behind the West. The macro-framework ofChinese interpretation theory can be roughly divided into three parts: generalinterpretation research, special interpretation research and applied interpretationresearch. (龚龙生 2008: 80) General interpretation research refers to the study offundamental issues related to interpretation, such as what is the nature of interpretation,how the interpretation proceed and how to define the standards for measuring the quality of interpretation. The special interpretation research studies mutual translationbetween two languages and cultures. Both of these are studies of basic theoreticalcategories of interpretation. However, the applied interpretation research focuses onspecific interpretation practice skills, interpretation teaching and training. At first, thetheoretical studies of interpretation in China were mostly based on experience andintrospection. But later, they began to shift the focus from the descriptiton of theinterpretation process to the study of the interpreter's thinking activities. In addition,China has also begun to introduce western interpretation theories and seeked furtherdevelopment. The main theories it introduced included Interpretive Theory, CognitiveLoad Theory and Cognitive Capability Development Model, among which the first onehas a profound impact on the study of Chinese interpretation.
Since its introduction to China in the late 1970s, the Interpretive Theory hasundergone a rapid dissemination and development. It has now become one of the mostinfluential interpretation theories in China's interpreting world. The dissemination anddevelopment of the theory in China mainly benefited from the vigorous promotion ofseveral scholars who have graduated from école Supérieur d’Interpretes et deTraducteurs (ESIT), such as Bao Gang, Liu Heping, and Cai Xiaohong. (张吉良 2010)Besides, they developed this theory from different aspects. For example, Bao Gangproved the deverbalization hypothesis from the perspective of psycholinguistics; LiuHeping, who has ever translated the Interpretive Theory works, developed the theoryfrom the perspective of teaching research through studying interpretation process andthe rules of thinking; Cai Xiaohong researched the interpretation process model andability assessment, etc. and explained the dynamic process of interpretation from theperspective of thinking mode, energy distribution and the development of interpretingability. Although the research on Interpretive Theory has made a lot of progress inChina, there are still many issues that need to be further studied.
