4.3 Making Adequate Preparation before Interpretation ...................... 23

Chapter Four Three Solutions

4.1 Grasping the Original Meaning of Speakers

Business interpreting is a communicative activity with certain purpose, whichdetermines the varied roles of the interpreter. “During the negotiation, the translator’sresponsibility, in addition to assisting the communication, is promoting the cooperativeresults. If the speaker uses synonyms or repeats words too often, the translator cansummarize the central idea by removing redundant words” (陈明瑶 2004: 31). Thetriangle model of Interpretive Theory divides the process of interpreting into threecrucial parts: comprehension, deverbaliazation and expression. Grasping the originalmeaning of speakers is the best example of good comprehension. Only when theinterpreter understands the true meaning of the source discourse can she express thecentral idea of the speaker. When the logic or sentence order of the source language areincorrect or messy, the interpreter is ought to ponder the original intention of thespeaker. Here is a verified example:

Example:

Analysis: There are two main problems in this discourse: word redundancy and logicvagueness. In the first sentence, the Chinese agency slipped up the number of the seniorcollege by saying “20 万的老年大学”. But he added “这里面的人就有 20 万”, so theauthor calculated that “Jiangsu Association of Senior Colleges consists 200,000 elderlypeople”. The last sentences were disordered and awfully organized. After seconds ofcomprehension, the author grasped the original meaning of the speaker and reorganizedthe discourse in target language.

..............................

Conclusion and Recommendations

Through combining the Interpretive Theory and several conundrums the authorencountered during the interpretation project, this report explores three correspondentsolutions. The three elements of triangle model of the Interpretive Theory, comprehension, deverbalization and reformulation, offer the author much inspirationand serve as a guide for the whole report writing.

The main difficulties can be classified into three categories: a) discursive sourcelanguage; b) pitfall of word-for-word correspondence; c) unfamiliarity with technicalterms. By analyzing the specific typical examples excerpted from the originalinterpreting materials of the project and referring to Interpretive Theory, the authorfound the following solutions: a) grasping the original meaning of speakers; b)interpreting the meaning not the word; c) making adequate preparation beforeinterpretation. In business negotiations where most speakers do not have a well-prepared speech and make impromptu conversations, the source language to beinterpreted will quite likely be illogical and full of jargon mostly. At this time, theinterpreter is ought to find the internal relations between seemingly disorderedsentences and then express the meaning in an understandable manner. This report hopesto provide suggestions and skills for business interpreters to come.
