Prior studies on translation variation theory consist of theoretical and practicaldiscussion. It is lauded as a translatology breakthrough thanks to the nature ofscientific and creative (Xu 2002). This translation theory deepens the understandingof what is translation, offering a new theoretical reference for defining translationcategory in a complete and objective manner (Xu 2003). In fact, its research scopehas not been confined to theoretical study, but has extended to discipline andmethodology studies (Huang and Li 2004). Seeking common arguments andbridging gaps with foreign translation theories have been all the rage. For instance,Huang (2005) insisted that skopos theory and fidelity principle could provideexplanatory guidance for the feasibility of translation variations. In a same veil,incompleteness and manipulation of the source text under descriptive approaches totranslation studies shed new light on translation variation theory since they conceivetranslation as not only a language-switch activity, but an act of translators’ creativitybased on target-orientation (Li 2014). Currently, translation variation study has beenlinked with other disciplines. Three components of situation of context: field, mode,tenor can expound and justify the translation variations in text translation (Liu 2005).Some scholars seek to explain translation variation from such perspectives asstylistics, relevance theory, and linguistic adaptation theory (Wei 2007; Ye 2009;Zhang 2010), which give a theoretical elaboration on this concept.
