In the prelude，Wangstated that "as a custom of the Chu people, they believed in ghost and liked to offersacrifices，and when there was a sacrificial ceremony，there were always singing anddancing in order to make the gods happy." “Jiu Ge (《九歌》）,，was a work of Qu Yuan'srevised version of folk songs for offering sacrifices to gods.Unlike The Book of Poetry, the sentences in Chu Ci are longer and the poems areirregular-numbered, in which a great deal of local dialect of Chu is used. It is muchstronger in feeling，more complicated in content and more varied in style compared toThe Book of Poetry, In the history of Chinese literature, these poems are called theSao-Style poetry which is characteristic of the repeated use of the character xLChu Ci can never be separated by the name of Qu Yuan who was listed in the20th century as one of the most famous persons of culture in the world. He produced anew type of writing, with which the expressional power of poetry can be greatlycustom reflect how much people feel and respect for Qu Yuan.

 

1.3 Research Methodologyi) Comparision Method
This thesis adopted the research method of comparative translation. In the processof comparing Burton Watson's and Xu Yuanchong's English translations of Chu Ci，tomake the comparison more comprehensive and more convincing, the author madediagrams in which different translations were presented，in this way，the features ofBurton Watson's and Xu Yuanchong's versions will appear more clear and distinct.ii) Translation MethodIn the process of comparative study, some sentences should be back-translatedinto contemporary Chinese language in order that the faithfulness of the translation canbe seen.ii) Synthesis and Inductive MethodBy comparing of Burton Watson's and Xu Yuanchong's English translations ofChu Ci，this thesis summarizes the characteristics of the two versions.

1.4 Thesis Structure
The thesis falls into five chapters: the first being introduction; the second areview of English versions of Chu Ci, the researches that have been done andlimitations of the previous researches; the third concepts relevant to translator'ssubjectivity and academic backgrounds of Burton Watson and Xu Yuanchong; thefourth a comparative study of Burton Watson's and Xu Yuanchong's translation of ChuCi from perspective of the sound，sense, form，cultural images and style; the fifth aconclusion.
