"Translation is difficult. Poetry translation is more difficult. The translation ofancient poems is the most difficult" (Liu Zhongde，1991:26). The translation ofclassical Chinese poetry requires translators to have a penetrating understanding andgrasp of the original text and its cultural connotations. Meanwhile, it depends on anexcellent mastery of the target language. In terms of translation methods, a flexiblecombination of literal and free style, a wise choice between foreignization anddomestication is essential. It is necessary to optimize the translation on the targetreader's cultural background. Translation should not only convey Chinese culture, butalso attract target readers. Only in this way can translators enable readers to have a trueknowledge about the essence of Chinese culture and ultimately achieve the purpose ofcommunication between two different cultures.This thesis has made a detailed analysis of relevant major aspects of Chu Ci bymaking a comparative study of two representative English versions based on the theoryof translators' subjectivity. Having compared the translations by the two translators, thethesis works toward the following findings:both Xu's and Watson's versions aresuccessful yet their styles are so different. Due to his pursuit of beauty since hischildhood and his love for Chinese literature, especially classical Chinese poetry, Xubasically aims to introduce Chinese culture to the world and therefore to help enrich theworld culture. So Xu always does his best to reproduce beauty in three aspects~beautyin sense，in sound and in form. Sometimes he has to sacrifice the cultural imagery in theoriginal works to keep his translation metrical and readable which will make his versionaccepted and enjoyed greatly by both domestic and Western readers. He also pays greatattention to the reproduction of beautifo】 meaning and artistic value of the original andtries to make his versions characterized by the style of "few words with infinite sense".Xu renders verse into verse and he prefers to domesticate Chu Ci.
