1.2.2.1 Content of the source text

The source text of this translation practice is the first chapter of Children, Family and theState written by David William Archard, published by Ashgate Publishing Company. Thebook covers the following topics including the rights of children, the relationship betweenparent and children, family and social justice, principles guiding child protection practices andhealth care. Although the emphasis of each chapter is different, they are interrelated.

Children, Family and the State consists of three chapters, each of which takes children,family and the state as its respective title. The first chapter deals with children. It asks whetherchildren have all the rights or some rights that adults have. The chapter details that children ashuman beings have a certain moral status, however, there are things children may not do thatadults are permitted to do. More specifically, it is normally thought that, according to the willtheory of rights, children cannot posses rights, whereas according to the interest theory they can. The liberationist claim that children enjoy all the rights of adults. Others deny this, eitherbelieving that children have no rights, or believing that children have only some of the rightsadults. The application of the best interest principle should be limited, with no firm factsabout what is best for children.

2.1 Pre-translation

2.1.1 Preparing translation tools

After determining the source text and the main theory of translation guidance, thewriter of the report consulted a large number of relevant literature including Themoral and political status of children, Self-justifying paternalism written by DavidWilliam Archard, which helped the writer of the report grasp the linguistic style of theoriginal author and context information. At the same time, the writer of the report alsocarefully studied A Coursebook for English-Chinese Translation Skills, A Short Coursein English-Chinese Translation, Translation Studies and other books, and gainedexperience and applicable translation skills. In addition, the writer also read a largenumber of documents related to rights of children, which laid a solid foundation forthis translation practice.

A handy tool makes a handyman. As for the translation tools, the writer of thereport has prepared some paper dictionaries, such as English-Chinese dictionary (Lu,2007), Longman Dictionary of Contemporary English (Summers, 2014) and OxfordAdvanced English-Chinese Dictionary Sixth Edition (Oxford, 2003).

In addition, the translator should master the methods and techniques ofinvestigation and research, especially learn to use the Internet to understand the sourcetext and find appropriate ways of expression.
