5.1 Major findings

Major findings are drawn as below in the light of the translator’s practice and experience.First of all, as the saying goes, “a beard well lathered is half shaved”, a thorough preparationbefore translating is second to none in completing a readable and fluent translation. Socialscience texts generally involve a great deal of terminologies and background knowledge. Thesource text of this translation practice involves the rights of children and the accuratetranslation of them requires the writer of the report to read parallel texts in advance tounderstand their actual meanings. In addition, in the process of translation, attention should bepaid to the compilation and timely updating of glossary to avoid repetition and thus reducingwork efficiency.

Secondly, translation strategies and translation principles are indispensable in atranslation practice, which requires the writer of the report to have an understanding of theircontents and apply them to practice. In this translation practice, the writer of the reportclassifies the source text as informative text according to its linguistic features and takesNewmark’s semantic translation and communicative translation as the theoretical basis. In thewhole translation process, the writer of the report keeps the reading experience of the targetreader in mind and gives examples to illustrate the application of semantic translation andcommunicative translation.

Thirdly, proofreading after translation is the guarantee of a good translation practice.Translations can be misrepresented for various reasons. As the saying goes, “many handsprovide great strength”, through self-proofreading and proofreading by others, the revisedversion may be more accurate and natural than the first draft.
