Chapter 1 Note-taking During Consecutive Interpreting

1.1 The Importance of Note-taking

An interpreter’s primary tool for storing information is the working memory, orshort-term memory. An interpreter should possess strong active listening skills and be ableto store the primary information of a passage into the short-term memory. However, research has proven that the duration which information can be stored and the amount ofinformation which can be stored in the short-term memory is limited. In his research, psychologist George A. Miller put forth the idea that most adults have a short-termmemory capacity of 7 (plus or minus 2) information chunks. Miller proposed that only acertain number of “slots” are available to store information in the short-term memory andtherefore capacity is limited (Miller). When interpreting consecutively, an interpreter isrequired to decode and store these chunks of prepositions at a continuous rate making it anextremely difficult task. If a chunk of information has not been stored in the short-termmemory, it will be replaced by the next incoming chunk (Christoffels 325). Furthermore, research has revealed that information stored in the short-term memory “will decay and belost in a period of about 30 seconds or less” (Shiffrin and Atkinson 180). Therefore, relying on the working memory alone is insufficient during consecutive interpreting. Theprimary information of a passage may be successfully stored, however, bits of secondary information will inevitably be omitted. Thus, consecutive interpreters must possess anefficient note-taking system in order to relieve the cognitive load placed on the workingmemory.

.........................

1.2 Principles of Note-taking

Each interpreter’s note-taking technique differs based on varying factors such asdifferences in personal preference and style, or the languages in which an interpreterworks. However, no matter the interpreter, the purpose of note-taking is the same and thatis to aid the interpreter in recalling the content of the original passage of speech. There isno right or wrong method, just as long as the notes serve this purpose efficiently. However, there are widely agreed upon principles of note-taking that should be followed. In his book,Note-taking in Consecutive Interpreting, Jean-Francois Rozan states that “the use of atechnique is always dependent upon the application of a certain number of principles” (15).In terms of note-taking as a technique, Rozan offers seven simple principles to beconsidered by consecutive interpreters: 1. Noting the idea and not the word; 2. The rules ofabbreviation; 3. Links; 4. Negation; 5. Emphasis; 6. Verticality; 7. Shift (15).

Regarding the first principle, Rozan states that the interpreter “must be free of theoften misleading constraints that words represent. It is through the analysis and notation ofthe ideas that the interpreter will avoid mistakes and a laboured delivery” (15). The secondprinciple provides suggestions of how individual words and chunks of meaning can beabbreviated and also how to indicate gender and tense.
